Some 2 million workers are victims of workplace violence each year. Workplace violence can strike anywhere, at any time. No one is immune. Violence in the workplace is a serious safety and health issue that every employee and every company should be aware of. Workplace violence stems from actions, words, or intentions intended to harm workers. This type of threatening, intimidating, or aggressive behavior can occur inside or outside the workplace, and can range from written or verbal threats to physical assaults and homicide. This course will create a definition for workplace violence and discuss its impact on not only the individual, but also the entire workplace. We will cover strategies for defusing violence, talk about the risks that exist in the workplace, and learn how to manage the work environment after a violent incident has occurred. This course will cover topics such as:
• What is workplace violence? • Behaviors associated with workplace violence • Sources of violent behavior in the workplace • Workplace violence prevention Your staff will:
• Learn the definition, forms and risk factors of violence• Understand how violence impacts you and your workplace • Review your company’s stance and your responsibilities on violence • Know that there are resources available to you • Recognize and report triggering events and threats • Develop active listening skills and constructive feedback • Respond to the inappropriate • Learn what never to say or do • Utilize the company resources available to you Your managers will:
• Follow OSHA’s guidelines for preventing hazards, including
violence• Learn how to conduct a Workplace Vulnerability Analysis • See how workplace guidelines and policies curb workplace violence • Recognize the value of wellness & post-termination assistance • Communicate policies and resources to create a safe environment • Recognize the warning signs of potentially violent behavior • Learn how to respond to and investigate incidents of violence • Document and report occurrences of violent behavior • Reinforce nonviolence through training and committees Module 1 – Introduction to Violence in the Workplace
Violence in the workplace today is a very real and very serious issue. In this module employees will discover what workplace violence is and what the forms and risk factors are. Module 2 – Strategies for Defusing Violence
in the Workplace
A variety of events trigger workplace violence. Teaching employees to recognize and respond to these events can greatly reduce the risk of incidents in any workplace. Through real-world examples employees will begin to see how certain events may be the catalyst for violence in their workplace and what they then must do to respond appropriately.Audience: Staff & Managers Length: 27 minutes The learning outcomes for this module are:
Module 3 – The Risk of Violence and the Policies
That Defuse It
In this module, managers will receive insight into OSHA's guidelines and learn how these set guidelines can prevent safety hazards and violence in the workplace. Managers will also learn how to effectively communicate policies and provide resources to their employees, so that the entire staff can enjoy a safer working environment.Audience: Managers Length: 30 minutes The learning outcomes for this module are:
Module 4 – The 4 Rs of Managing Violence: Recognize,
Respond, Report and Reinforce
Managers need to be able to recognize the warning signs of potentially violent behavior, so that they may be proactive in defusing violent or hazardous events. This is essential when creating a safe working environment and is the focus of this final module. Managers will also learn how to investigate and respond to all incidents of violence in the workplace, from start to finish.Audience: Managers Length: 17 minutes The learning outcomes for this module are:
