Sexual Harassment Course

This course will help faculty and staff understand the importance of harassment training and the need to maintain a degree of awareness on and off campus. This course will also assist you in creating and maintaining a learning environment which is respectful and free from harassment.


Module 1 – Introduction to Sexual Harassment
The first module of our Harassment Prevention on Campus focuses on setting the stage for sexual harassment training by explaining the scope of the course, revealing the core issues that surround harassing behavior, and the various kinds of consequences that a campus can expect as a result of a harassment incident. Additionally, you will review and acknowledge your organization's sexual harassment policy.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Learn what sexual harassment is and what it is not
  • Understand how common sexual harassment is on campus
  • Learn roles and responsibilities on campus
  • Look at the consequences that result from harassing behavior
  • Acknowledge the college or university sexual harassment policy


Module 2 –Sexual Harassment – Law
Just like the workspaces of today's top companies, sexual harassment on the college or university campus is governed by the law. In this module we review the precedent-setting cases that defined sexual harassment law, learn the importance of Title VII and Title IX in the academic setting, and look at the seven steps of a harassment assessment resource.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Understand the laws that define sexual harassment
  • Explore the cases that set the legal precedents for sexual
    harassment law
  • Review a 7-Point Sexual Harassment Assessment
  • Recognize the different types of harassment that exist on campus
  • Review Academic Freedom as it relates to harassment (Faculty only)


Module 3 – Recognizing Sexual Harassment on Campus
Sexual harassment stems from instances of unwelcome behavior. Understanding what constitutes unwelcome behavior and how to keep unwelcome behavior out of the academic environment are the core objectives of this module.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Learn the definition of unwelcome behavior
  • Recognize the problems unwelcome behavior can create
  • Understand Defined vs. Gray Areas of harassment
  • Review Impact vs. Intent in the academic setting
  • Explore the Power vs. Gender dynamic


Module 4 – Understanding Forms of Harassment
Sexual harassment can take many forms in the academic environment. This module guides you through the various kinds of harassment and exposes the sources that can unexpectedly introduce unwelcome behavior on campus, including peers, third-parties, and supervisor-subordinate interactions. This module also explains the importance of immediately speaking up and speaking out when harassing behavior is experienced, witnessed, or uncovered.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Learn the different types of sexual harassment on campus
  • Understand the intricacies of gender-related harassment
  • Recognize when to speak up and speak out against harassment
  • Explore discriminatory harassment and its impact on campus


Module 5 – Responding to Sexual Harassment on Campus
Being able to recognize unwelcome behaviors on campus is only the first step to containing and overcoming sexual harassment. This module focuses on the responsibilities of those on campus who encounter harassment as a witness, a victim, or as a third-party who learns of the unwelcome behavior.

Additionally, this module covers how to handle false allegations, discusses issues of confidentiality, and reviews steps anyone can take to stop harassment.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Explore the different experiences a learner can have with harassment
  • Recognize the consequences for false allegations and retaliatory actions
  • Learn why victims don’t speak up against harassment
  • Understand the responsibilities of the learner when faced with harassment


Module 6 - Supervisor Responsibility and Liability

The supervisor is in a unique position when a sexual harassment allegation is made or when he/she discovers harassment has been occurring within a department. Immediate action must be taken or the supervisor risks additional instances of harassment and the endangerment of his/her position.
This module explores the key role of the supervisor in the academic environment, the steps a supervisor can take to arrest further instances of harassment, and the liabilities of the supervisor should he/she fail to act in a timely manner.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Learn how to create an environment of respect on campus
  • Discover effective ways to communicate your organization’s policies
  • Understand who must be protected in a harassment allegation
  • Recognize the importance of avoiding rushed judgments
  • Learn the supervisor’s liabilities for not responding to harassment allegations


Module 7 - How to Handle a Sexual Harassment Claim
When a supervisor encounters sexual harassment – either through his/her own discovery or from an allegation from a subordinate – action must be immediately taken to resolve the situation. This module walks the supervisor through a 10-step process for handling a sexual harassment allegation, including a real-time investigation scenario that reinforces each step of the process. Additionally, this module provides training on finding support during challenging sexual harassment investigations.

The learning outcomes for this module are:
  • Walk through the 10 steps for handling a sexual harassment allegation
  • Learn how to handle a “gray area” sexual harassment claim
  • Understand the importance of requesting help as soon as its needed
  • Review the supervisor’s responsibilities when investigating an allegation
  • Address the importance of protecting the privacy of everyone involved
