
This course will teach all faculty and staff members the benefits diversity can bring to the campus community and show how discrimination and a lack of diversity can negatively impact the individual and the school. It will discuss how being proactive and doing everything in your power to create and maintain a learning environment that's respectful and free from discrimination will help create a productive, diverse campus for everyone.
The learning objectives for this course are:
- Identify what diversity is and how it appears in the college and university campus
- Understand and recognize the benefits of diversity in the student body, the faculty, and the staff
- Take a closer look at the biases, prejudices, and stereotypes that encourage discrimination
- Explore how discrimination impacts the college or university as well as the individuals who work at and attend the institution
- And, finally, help supervisors discover steps they can take to promote and support diversity programs, as well as learn when to get assistance once discrimination is discovered or a complaint or allegation of discriminatory harassment has been made
Module 1 – Introduction to Diversity and Discrimination on Campus
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Define Diversity and Discrimination
- Learn about the Changing American Workplace
- Review the laws that govern Diversity and Discrimination
- And, review your school’s policy
Module 2 –Welcoming Diversity on Campus
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Understand how embracing diversity leads to success for all members of the campus community
- Explore the benefits of diversity for both the individual as well as the institution
- Learn to recognize diversity in those around you
- And discover the challenges diversity can present and how to navigate them
Module 3 – Recognizing Discrimination on Campus
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Recognize bias in yourself and others
- Learn the negative effects of bias, prejudice, and stereotypes
- Examine the types of discrimination and understand that all forms of discrimination are unacceptable
- Familiarize yourself with what discrimination looks like and sounds like
- And review the importance of proper conduct in any environment
Module 4 – Minimizing Discrimination on Campus
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Learn how to combat discrimination through self-awareness
- Understand the importance of adhering to the standards of professionalism set forth by your college or university
- And help create an environment of respect on campus, off campus, and online
Module 5 – Responding to Discrimination on Campus
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Know what to do if you experience discrimination
- Learn how retaliation on your part or against you can lead to severe penalties
- Understand why some victims of discrimination don’t speak up
- Be familiar with false accusations and how they can harm an environment of respect
- Recognize the importance of reporting allegation details to the proper authorities and refraining from revealing details to those who don’t absolutely need to know
- Understand your responsibilities as a victim, a witness, or a third-party participant in discrimination
- And review your institutions policy
Module 6 - Supervisor Skills for Promoting and Supporting Diversity
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Learn some of the benefits of working with diversity on campus
- Recognize the challenges that can occur from diversity programs
- Understand the steps supervisors can take to be more aware of diversity and to become more aware of their own perceptions of others in the workplace
- Discover the steps supervisors can take to promote and support diversity in the workplace
- Learn how supervisors can create an environment of respect and inclusion
Module 7 - Handling an Allegation of Discrimination
The learning outcomes for this module are:
- Understand what an allegation of discrimination means for your department
- Discover why supervisors need to act immediately when discrimination is uncovered
- Learn what steps supervisors can follow if an allegation of discrimination is made
- Explore what help is available to supervisors to protect subordinates from discrimination
